We’re soon to reach peak flu season and while we’re all vulnerable to catching a winter bug, if you work in an office you’re far more likely to be laid low.
Researchers have found that offices are teeming with millions of bacteria and nasty germs. Indeed, up to 60% of illnesses that result in absence from work are contracted from office equipment contaminated by bacteria including E coli.
With eight out of ten of us working in close proximity with colleagues and sharing office equipment, you’ll be lucky to get through winter without falling ill.
Here’s how to take matters into your own hands and help protect against colds, flu and other bugs this winter:
Carry a hand sanitiser: According to research, the average desk contains 400 times more germs than a toilet seat. While you can be reasonably confident that bathrooms are being regularly disinfected, desk surfaces rarely get more than a cursory clean. With the rise in the popularity of hot-desking, germs are readily passed around. NatraSan kills over 99.9999% of germs. Try our NatraSan Travel Buddy 100ml to spritz your desk regularly and sanitise your hands.
Don’t eat at your desk: Around 65% of office workers now share desks so it’s little wonder that equipment is teeming with bugs. Keyboards are notorious for attracting crumbs from workers eating at their desks. Try not to eat at your desk but if you have to, move the keyboard away so it doesn’t collect food particles, which are a haven for bacteria. Wash your hands or use a hand sanitiser before eating so that bacteria aren’t transferred from your hands to your sandwich.
Avoid dirty phone calls: Only 3% of offices are cleaned sufficiently, according to research. The same study found that telephones harboured the most bacteria, followed by computer mice and keyboards. Wipe down equipment with antibacterial wipes every day, or spritz some NatraSan onto a clean paper towel to give equipment a thorough clean.
Keep your hands clean: The typical office worker’s hands come into contact with 10 million bacteria per day, and a colleague carrying a virus can infect 50% of all equipment and employees within their vicinity in just four hours. Keeping hands clean can dramatically reduce the likelihood of being infected. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water throughout the day, but bear in mind that experts say you need to scrub them for at least 20 seconds to get them clean. Alternatively, use a hand sanitiser to disinfect your hands instantly.
Take care on the commute: Using public transport makes you vulnerable to cold and flu viruses travelling through the air from a cough or a sneeze. Infected droplets can get into the body through the mouth or eyes. Viruses can be passed from hand to mouth via carriage handles or straps on trains and buses. Carry a hand sanitiser and use before and after your commute.
